Event Description
Guidelines and Code of Conduct
Mahjong Interest Group (IG) is a grassroots activity supported under the People's Association (PA) network of Community Clubs / Residents' Network. In line with PA's mission to spark and nurture community participation for a caring and united Singapore, our Mahjong IG exists purely as a social and recreational platform — a friendly space for residents to bond, exercise the mind, and build community ties over a shared interest in the game. These guidelines apply to all members, guests, and helpers at every session, whether held at the Community Club, RN premises, or any other IG-organised venue.
Our Purpose
- To bring residents together for friendly, recreational mahjong in a safe and welcoming environment.
- To promote social bonding, mutual respect, and inclusivity among members of all backgrounds, races, and age groups, consistent with PA's mission of building a cohesive community.
- To provide a fun, mentally engaging activity accessible to all skill levels — beginners are welcome and will be paired supportively.
No Gambling Policy
- No money, vouchers, or items of monetary value may be staked, wagered, exchanged, or collected as winnings during any IG game day. This applies to all forms of play, including "friendly" per-point tallies with cash settlement.
- Play is for points, tally sheets (for personal tracking only), or non-monetary tokens with no cash-out value.
- Members must not bring cash specifically for use as stakes, nor arrange any side bets before, during, or after games.
- Any member found gambling with money will be asked to stop immediately. Repeat or serious breaches will result in removal from the IG (see Section 5).
Player Conduct
All players are expected to always conduct themselves with courtesy and good sportsmanship:- Treat fellow players, guests, and committee members with respect and consideration — this includes respecting differences in age, skill level, race, and language.
- No abusive language, shouting, intimidation, or aggressive behaviour will be tolerated at the table.
- Be gracious in both winning and losing. Mahjong is meant to be enjoyable for everyone at the table.
- Handle tiles, tables, and facilities and equipment with care.
- Be punctual and considerate of session timings so as not to inconvenience other players waiting to play.
- Keep noise at a level considerate to other users of the venue.
Disputes & Policy Enforcement
- Any disputes arising during gameplay (e.g. scoring, rule interpretation, tile disputes) should first be raised calmly with the players at the table.
- If unresolved, the matter must be referred to the IG committee member on duty, whose decision on the dispute is final.
- The IG committee reserves the right to intervene in cases of poor behaviour, misconduct, or breach of these guidelines at any time, even without a formal complaint.
- The IG committee reserves the right to remove any player from the IG and/or the official WhatsApp group, with or without prior notice, where conduct is found to breach these guidelines or bring the IG into disrepute.
- Committee decisions are made in the interest of maintaining a safe, respectful, and enjoyable environment for all members, and are final.
General Reminders
- Sessions are open to registered members.
- Members are encouraged to look out for one another, especially elderly or first-time participants.
- Please inform the committee in advance if you are unable to attend a session you have signed up for, so seats can be reallocated.
- These guidelines may be reviewed and updated by the IG committee from time to time in consultation with the RN management.
