Event Description

NSE Community Farm Monthly workshop in June 2026

Workshop dates:
12 July 2026 (Sunday), 8am - 10am
25 July 2026 (Saturday), 8am - 10am

12 July 2026
Title: Composting 1
Description: Every piece of kitchen waste has the potential to become "black gold" for our plants! Today, we are setting up our first composting system and exploring aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen) composting.
Activities:
- Deweeding the Planter: Clearing out weeds from our planter pots to ensure they don't compete with our crops or contaminate our new compost.
- Greens & Browns Blueprint: Sourcing and prepping of Nitrogen-rich "Greens" (food scraps/fresh leaves) and Carbon-rich "Browns" (cardboard/paper) to activate our compost bin.

27 June 2026
Title: Compost 2
Description: Composting isn't a "set and forget" process; it takes active management to keep our hard-working microbes happy. We will check its progress, and transfer to 2nd crate to keep the rotation moving.
Activities:
- The Flip & Hydrate: Aerating our compost by physically turning/flipping the pile to inject fresh oxygen, and adjusting moisture levels so it feels like a perfectly wrung-out sponge.
- Observing the compost bin from our last workshop, transferring that maturing batch into a "2nd stage" crate for curing, and prepping a brand new batch of raw materials in the "1st stage" crate to keep the cycle going.

Event FAQ

June workshop

Workshop 1
14 June 2026
Title: Transplanting

Not all plants grow at the same speed! Today, we're moving our 'splinter' (bok choy) into its permanent home in the planter. Before they can settle in, we'll be deweeding the area to make sure no 'uninvited guests' steal their nutrients. We'll finish byt watering our greens to help them recover from the move and grow strong.

Activities:
- Transplanting Bok Choy
- Root Protection: Learning the "hole method" to avoid hurting delicate young roots.

Workshop 2
27 June 2026
Title: Harvest and Turn over

To fix our poor soil long-term, we are processing kitchen waste and using the power of worms to create a high-performance organic fertilizer that strengthens our plants from the roots up.

Activities:
- Blending Eggshells: Milling dried shells into a fine powder to provide instant calcium for "strong bones" in our vegetables.
- Vermicast Integration: Adding nutrient-rich worm castings to our compost mix to introduce beneficial microbes and boost plant immunity.
