Event Description

JAPANESE OCCUPATION GUIDED WALK
"LIVING IN SYONAN-TO"

To the current generation, The Japanese Occupation of Syonan-to is a distant memory, a memory that bears little relevance to our lives today. Yet, there are countless lessons from this period that we must remember, and untold stories of resilience, sacrifice and survival that we must honor.

This programme takes you through key locations in the city connected to the Japanese Occupation, allowing us to commemorate this crucial chapter in Singaporeโ€™s history. It is a journey that fosters an appreciation for peace and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity!

Objectives:

  • Exploring Daily Struggles: Gain insight into the harsh daily life and severe food shortages that characterized the Japanese Occupation. Re-evaluate your understanding of currency and its value as it was used under the Japanese Military Administration.
  • Encountering Fear and Courage: Experience the fear that permeated the local population in the presence of the Kempeitai (Japanese Military Police). Explore the stories of individuals who displayed exceptional courage and resilience in the face of Japanese oppression and torture.
  • Learning the lessons from the past: Reflect on the profound impact of the Japanese Occupation on Singapore and the enduring lessons we can learn. Develop the will to protect our sovereignty and defend our home.
