Eligibility for blood donation
To be eligible for blood donation, donors must meet certain basic requirements relating to their age, weight, health, etc. For donors aged 16 & 17 years old, they would need a signed parental consent form before we can register them for blood donation. Visits to certain travel destinations could also cause a donor to be deferred temporarily from making a donation. For example, donors who have recently visited and stayed at least one night at malaria-endemic areas (e.g. India, Batam, Bintan, Myanmar) will be deferred for a period of 4 months. However, donors who visited a malaria endemic area for a short “day trip” (that is, the visit was only during the daytime) are not considered to be at risk and can donate as per normal.
